Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Treatment Concealer Review

Hi Weirdos 🙂
It’s back to school for me(sad face) which means I will not be posting as often as last week but I will do my best. I ran the Cell C day of races yesterday and was wondering if you Joburg folk would like a review on the event as it’s coming there on the 11th June 2017. Let me know in the comments 🙂
Now my main skin concern are my dark circles and while I try to treat it I have not found something that drastically lightens it so I tend to cover it up. Other than lipstick, concealer is my other must have product, if not I really look like a raccoon. So today I am reviewing the much hyped up Maybelline instant age rewind dark circle treatment concealer. It is definitely a mouth full but is it worth the hype? Read on to find out.
Product description(from Maybelline website):
This super-concentrated treatment concealer features a micro-corrector applicator to help instantly erase dark circles and fine lines. Infused with goji berry and Haloxylâ„¢. The eye area appears radiant and refreshed in no time.
Ingredients(from Maybelline website):
G852364 1 Aqua/Water/Eau, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Isododecane, Glycerin, Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Nylon-12, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Cyclohexasiloxane, Peg-10 Dimethicone, Cetyl Peg/Ppg-10/1 Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Methylparaben, Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract, Chlorphenesin, Ethylparaben, Aluminum Hydroxide, Peg-9, N-Hydroxysuccinimide, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Chrysin, Palmitoyl Tetr Apeptide-7. [+/- May Contain/Peut Contenir: Ci 77891/Titanium Dioxide, Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499/Iron Oxides] F.I.L. D44980/4
Packaging:
6ml/0.2 fl oz. of product. It comes in a clear plastic tube with a sponge applicator which works upon twisting. You can see the colour from the tube which is good and the sponge applicator is quite easy to use but it is large for the under eye area.

Now I have been using this for a while now and realised that the sponge soaks up a lot of product. Also, it can contain bacteria as you use it directly under the eye. I have opted to remove the sponge, it came off quite easily by just pulling it gently. Becareful if you try this or rather use a scissors to cut it off. However, you can apply the product to a mixing palette then apply to your face if you do not want to remove the sponge. If you don’t mind the bacteria and losing product I guess you can use it as it is.
Texture:
I quite like the consistency of this concealer. It is smooth and creamy yet quite lightweight. The last thing I want is something thick and heavy on my under eye area. It applies well to the skin on the area.

My experience with this concealer:
I have been using this for weeks now. I have the shade medium which is far too light for my skin tone(I am NC45 in MAC). I apply my orange corrector, my LA girl concealer in Toffee then the Maybelline concealer over as a highlight. I love the way this concealer brighten ups my under eye area. It has a great finish and never creases or dries down the area. It has such a great pigment for a lightweight concealer. I use a beauty blender to blend this out. It is best to apply a little then build upon it if you need more coverage, in this way it doesn’t look cakey or patchy. I have fine lines under my eyes and it doesn’t accentuate them or settle into them. It does dries out pretty fast so you need to blend it out quickly. I used banana powder to set this concealer and it does not have a shimmery look. I also noticed that over time the concealer settles in and matches your skin tone. This product lasts quite long roughly 8 hours and it does not fade in this time. It has a light to medium coverage.
The active ingredients in this treatment are Goji berry extract and the haloxyl. Goji berry are known as the “fruit of longevity” due to their antioxidant and protective properties. Haloxyl in an anti-aging ingredient that has been proven to reduce the discoloration around the eyes. Maybelline claims that this product will not only conceal your dark circles but also treat it over time. My dark circles are genetic and partly due to my diet so I have not seen it lighten up using this product but it may be different for you. As a concealer I love this drugstore product. Below I used the concealer on the left under eye area only so you can see the difference.

Overall thoughts:
This is one of my favourite drugstore concealers, its lightweight highly pigmented formula is a winner in my books. My other favourite is the LA girl concealers which I cannot live without. However, if this actually came in a shade suitable for my skin tone I would not need the LA girl concealers. This is the shade range it comes in below(picture from internet):

There are only 6 shades and nothing for dark skinned people. I really pray they make shades suitable for darker skin tones. It really disgusts me when companies do not cater to all skin tones.
Other than the lack of shades available. I definitely recommend this product. It is probably the best drugstore concealer I have used. I have combination skin so this did not dry my under eye area but if you have super dry under eye area then I do not suggest using this. If you have my skin type and are looking for something that isn’t heavy and doesn’t crease then I suggest this. Ofcourse, if you medium to dark skinned then you will have to use it to highlight.
These are not found in South African stores, another pet peeve of mine when it comes to drugstore brands. I am not really sure why South Africa is the last to get these products but it really is annoying. You can purchase them from www.samika.co.za. This is a 100% authentic store with the best customer service.

    Wonder how they compare to the Revlon that looks almost the same…could just be dupe packaging though
